It has often been referred to as the greatest sneaker of all time. It has spawned many imitators and even more followers. Released in 1982 and designed by the legendary Bruce Kilgore, the Air Force 1 was the first sneaker to feature “Air” technology and was named after the Air Force One aircraft that is used by the President of the United States. As Nike’s most popular sneaker, everyone from mail carriers to NBA greats have laced them up. Plus, since 1982 the Air Force 1 has been produced in over 1,500 different color combinations. And, there’s absolutely no end in sight.

Created by legendary Nike designer Bruce Kilgore, the Nike Air Force 1 was first released in 1982. They were named after the airplane that the President of the United States travels in (the Air Force One) and were the first Nike shoe that featured “Air” technology. Although Air Force 1 shoes are currently available in low, mid, and high models they were originally only available in high and Nike Air Force 1 low. Both models featured a toebox absent of perforated holes and had mesh side panels. Also, the Air Force 1 High model featured a innovative strap that aimed to prevent ankle injuries while playing basketball.
Today, the Air Force 1 has grown to be one of the most recognizable sneakers ever created. Nike has released them in over a thousand different colorways and has collaborated with many companies, artists, and athletes to produce limited Air Force Ones Low that are highly sought after. Yet, with all of the unique colors, patterns, and custom Air Force 1 designs the “black on black” and “white on white” models are still the most popular. The are a mainstay in any wardrobe and are a favorite among sneaker collectors and the general public alike.
